Texte au verso : These oaks are 200 years old. The Avenue was once part of the gardens laid out by Governor Van der Stel. The Houses of Parliament have a frontage of 264 feet on this avenue ; they are surrounded by tasteful gardens. The English Cathedral and the Jewish Synagogue are also on Government avenue, while the Indian Mosque and the Malay Mosque rear their minarets and eupolas in a adjoining street. Government House, the residence of the Imperial High Commissioner for South Africa, adjoins the Houses of Parliament. Opposite are the Botanical Gardens with 8000 varieties of trees and plants from all parts of the world. The high winds from the sea retard the growth of oak and eucalyptus alike. The Cape of Good Hope was at first called the Cape of Storms. Cape Town on Table Bay was founded by the Dutch in 1652 and ceded to Great Britain in 1815. Its population, including suburbs, approaches 100,000. Before the opening of the Suez Canal Cape Town was of very great importance as the half-way house to India. In case of the Suez Canal being closed by war it would again assume supreme value.
